Case Analysis
18. Read the case situation given below and answer the questions that follow:
HMT Textiles, a medium-sized garment manufacturing company in Nepal, has been a significant employer in Chitwan. The company prides itself on producing eco-friendly clothing using organic cotton and dyes. However, a recent investigation revealed that its wastewater disposal practices were polluting a nearby river, which serves as a critical water source for local farmers and residents.
The pollution has led to declining fish populations, affecting the livelihoods of local fishermen. Farmers have also reported reduced crop yields due to the contaminated water used for irrigation. These revelations sparked public outrage, with environmental activists and community leaders demanding immediate action.
In response, the company announced a plan to build a modern wastewater treatment facility within two years. It also pledged to work with local NGOs to clean the river and provide financial assistance to affected families. Additionally, HMT Textiles launched a community engagement program to involve residents in monitoring its environmental impact.
Despite these efforts, critics argue that the company prioritized cost-cutting over environmental responsibility and took action only after public scrutiny. They question whether the measures are a genuine commitment to sustainability or a strategic move to preserve the company’s reputation.
At the same time, some community members acknowledge the company’s economic contributions, including job creation and investment in local infrastructure. They emphasize the importance of finding a balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship.
Questions:
a. What are the key ethical and environmental issues presented in the case?
b. How can HMT Textiles balance its economic goals with its responsibility toward the environment and local communities?
c. Evaluate the company’s response to the criticism. Are its actions sufficient? Why or why not?
d. What long-term strategies should the company adopt to ensure sustainable and socially responsible operations?
