Case Analysis ( 1 × 20 = 20)

Read the case situation given below and answer the questions that follow.

“Technology is helping Education to be Catalysts for Peace” explains how the Ministry of Education may keep track of information about students, teachers, and infrastructure across various educational institutions under its purview [responsibility].

The solution being developed consists of an Education Management Information System (EMIS) which the teachers, government personnel, and other stakeholders use to receive, update, or fill out information about the number of students, grades, staff teaching, non-teaching, etc., which then collected digitally and sent to the ministry for the annual report.

Among other things, the overview document mentions- “Because in every school or district has access to the Internet, users can store the data on a flash disk and bring it to the cybercafe to upload the information onto the system.” This is similar to the connectivity issues some of the authorized groups face and would be looking to solve for their respective project deployments.

Questions:

  1. How does the involvement of a major corporate (e.g., Microsoft in this case) affect the solution development?
  2. Is the project technology/development closely coupled to the future performance of the corporate involved? Discuss.
  3. Does the involvement of a large corporate always help (or not help) in reaching an effective, sustainable solution?
  4. Although it is natural for corporates to employ their own proprietary or open-source technologies, how is the resulting system kept flexible and resilient enough to a possible change of technology in the future?
